Officially registered on July 15, 1989, Transgranitos began its activity exclusively focused on the trading of ornamental stone. Just one year later, following a change in its corporate structure, the company adopted a more ambitious vision, integrating quarrying and stone processing into its operations. The objective was clear, to consolidate its commercial position and project Portuguese granite onto the international market.
This marked the starting point of what would become, over the following decades, an internationally established project and a benchmark within the sector. A story of vision, strategy, and perseverance that shows how, through skill and technical expertise, raw stone blocks can be transformed into elegant products of high strength, precision, and timeless beauty.
Early Steps
With the vision clearly defined, the next phase was implementation, marked by the construction of a manufacturing facility equipped with all the necessary stone processing lines. This investment enabled the strengthening of existing distribution channels, the creation of new market access points, and a significant reduction in dependence on subcontracting, relying on third parties only for the supply of specific raw material varieties.
Transgranitos then moved into the production and commercial distribution of ornamental stone in the form of slabs and blocks for the construction sector, suitable for facades, flooring, bathrooms, and staircases. Each product was produced exclusively to order, with no stock manufacturing. This operating model allowed the company to steadily expand its commercial footprint, with export markets becoming the primary destination of its production.
This approach led to increased business volume and expansion into the European market, particularly Germany, where a branch office was opened in 1993, as well as Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The contrast between international markets, capable of absorbing large volumes and sustaining continuous industrial operations, and the domestic market, characterized by smaller orders and a broader range of finishes, would ultimately prove decisive in shaping the company’s long-term growth.

Quality Assurance
In 1998, as part of its continued commitment to competitiveness and quality, Transgranitos became the first company in its sector to have its Quality Assurance System recognized by APCER, the Portuguese Certification Association, achieving NP EN ISO 9002 certification.

By 1999, the company was already gaining international visibility through landmark projects such as the Molde Stadium in Norway, built using granite from northern Portugal. For both the company and the region, this milestone confirmed a strategic direction and demonstrated that Portuguese natural stone had secured a place in international markets.

Safety, Research and Innovation
In 2003, Transgranitos obtained an additional certification (SGQSST), recognized by APCER in accordance with NP 4397:2001, reinforcing its commitment to quality, health, and workplace safety.
In 2004, further investments supported the expansion of the factory and the modernization of production lines, resulting in a significant increase in production capacity from six to eight thousand square meters per month.

A new milestone was reached in 2008 with the creation of a Research and Development unit in partnership with UTAD, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. This collaboration resulted in two patents, one related to granite coloration techniques and another focused on the development of vegetal substrates from industrial waste.

During a visit to the facilities in March 2009, the then President of the Portuguese Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, highlighted the importance of this path:
“This is a company that invests in innovation, research, and partnership with a university. It is an example worth showcasing. It proves that, with entrepreneurial initiative, management capability, talent, and by targeting the right markets, companies can succeed both on the coast and in the interior of the country.” (Source: Visão Magazine, 03/25/2009)

International Expansion
In 2010, in response to growing demand for marble and limestone across both international and domestic markets, Transgranitos invested in a dedicated marble and limestone processing department.
From late 2011 onward, the company intensified its focus on market diversification, consolidating its presence in Africa, particularly in Angola, while initiating prospecting activities in Mozambique, Morocco, and Algeria.

In 2013, expansion continued into Latin America, with the company establishing sales in Colombia, Mexico, and Panama within the following year.
A further investment in 2016 focused on modernizing production equipment and expanding the sale of stone slabs, contributing to a near doubling of turnover over the following three years.
Sustainability and Environmental Protection
Environmental responsibility and a commitment to sustainability have been a constant part of the company’s development.
In 2017, a photovoltaic power plant was installed and later expanded, reaching a current capacity of 600 kWp and avoiding the emission of several tons of CO₂ to date.
These efforts were complemented by a range of energy-efficiency measures, including the installation of LED lighting, the electrification of equipment, and the construction of a closed-loop wastewater treatment system to reduce water consumption.
Quarrying and Production Capacity
Holding exclusive quarrying rights to three quarries in northern Portugal, Transgranitos reaches a combined extraction volume of approximately 1,000 m³ of stone blocks per month. This level of output reflects continuous investment in equipment designed for cutting and handling large-scale blocks weighing up to 30 tons.

The manufacturing facility, located on a 50,000 m² industrial site, provides a stone processing capacity exceeding 11,000 m² of finished products per month or approximately 20,000 m² of slabs.
